HOW DOES OUR GARDEN GROW? DURING THIS MEETING, WE ARE ASKING EACH MEMBER TO BRING IN ONE NECTAR PLANT TO PLACE IN OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN. THIS PLANT NEEDS TO SUPPORT THE WILDLIFE WE WANT TO ATTRACT (BIRDS, BUTTERFLIES, AND BEES). EACH ONE OF YOU WILL DISCUSS THE TYPE OF PLANT YOU BROUGHT. PLEASE BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS:
NECTAR PLANTS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: COMMON BONESET BLAZING STARS MAXIMILLIAN SUNFLOWER EASTERN BLUESTAR WILD BERGAMONT PURPLE CONEFLOWER FRAGRANT COLUMBINE HYSSOP Alysa Armstrong led the Naturalist Club in a exploration about bees. Our January Naturalist Club featured Bryant Ainsbury and a great presentation on Hummingbirds. Leaf through his presentation and check out some of the photos of the kids building bird feeders. During the December meeting, Erin presented her monarch butterfly project. Did you know the butterflies are disappearing? What will we do without the butterflies? To save them we need to get to know them. In the meeting, Erin told us that weather, GMOs, parasites, and some people are destroying their habitats. Some butterflies starve, freeze, or die of disease. After the presentation, we planted milkweed in milk jugs and set them outside. Would you like to plant milkweed and join the efforts to help save Monarchs? Sign up to receive your free seeds from the Baden Academy Naturalist Club. These are a few of the words discussed and defined by Sister Lynn during her presentation to the Baden Academy Naturalist Club meeting. She demonstrated to the students by having them act out parts of the food web and also used a Powerpoint presentation to further instruct the students on how important everything is to the ecosystem from the blades of grass to animals and trees. Sister Lyn then took the students for a tour of the 88 acre property where they saw beautiful gardens, a grotto with water cisterns, and many habitats outside (including a drey, a squirrels nest, high up in a tree). They also saw grape farms and chickens, too! It was a very interesting and enlightening experience for all. Next meeting on December 4th, the students will be planting milkweed. Everyone is to bring in gallon milk jugs. |
